The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
